Georgia on my mind

Some thoughts about the Russian invasion of Georgia (Don’t worry Atlanta, I’m talking about the country of Georgia)
1. If Georgia had become a member of NATO, would this have happened (I’m thinking 60% no – 40% yes)
2. Did the CIA find out about this the same way the rest of us did, on CNN?
3. Did you know that if Georgia had become a member of NATO before Russia invaded, we would then be obligated by the North Atlantic Treaty, specifically Article 5, to assist them. It’s not a question, it’s a statement. Read the relevant portion for yourself:

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

4. Do we really want more countries to join NATO? I mean it seems super and all until we all wake up to the fact that we are committing ourselves to war with Russia over… Macedonia? Estonia? Slovenia? Bulgaria?
5. Did you know that Russia is in a NATO program called, and I am not making this up, the “Partnership for Peace”?
6. I’m starting to think that missile defense system in some former Soviet Bloc countries is not such a bad idea
7. Did you know Joseph Stalin was a Georgian?
8. Iceland is a member of NATO. Iceland’s population is less than that of Arlington, Texas.
9. Is NATO an organization that, though a good and necessary idea at the time, has outlived it’s usefulness?
