Ok, was it a Republican or Democrat who made the following statements about Timothy Geithner being confirmed as the Secretary of the Treasury?

A) “The failure to comply with our Nation’s tax laws would be problematic for any Cabinet nominee, but it is especially disturbing when it involves the individual who will be charged with overseeing the enforcement of our tax laws.”

B) “Given this record of failing to pay taxes, if confirmed as Treasury Secretary, how could Mr. Geithner speak with any credibility or authority as the Nation’s chief tax enforcer?”

C) “Had [Geithner] not been nominated for Treasury secretary, it’s doubtful that he would have ever paid these taxes.”

A – Democrat Russ Feingold, B – Democrat Tom Harkin, C – Democrat Robert Byrd (!)

And they’ve all hit the nail on the head! Given that, why the hell did 10 Republicans vote for this guy? It can’t be a simple case of Obamamania can it? Maybe they want to run with the cool crowd. “We wanted to show we’re all about lovin’ the new president by voting for one of his weakest nominees,” I suppose? Sounds like the Republicans need some spinach or Viagra or something. Talk about limp.

Ok, this is interesting. I was looking on Wikipedia to see which “third parties” were the most popular and the results surprised me a bit. Democrats & Republicans first and second; no surprise there. I guessed third was the Libertarian Party. Wrong. This information comes from the publication Ballot Access News and counts how voters in the USA were registered in November of 2006:

Democrats with 39.3 million

Republicans with 30.6 million

Independents (not a party) with 22.8 million

Constitution Party at 0.4 million

Green Party at 0.3 million

Libertarian Party at 0.2 million

Reform Party at 0.04 million

Natural Law Party at 0.02 million

and “other” at 0.7 million

I was mostly familiar with the top six parties but I didn’t even know what the hell the Natural Law Party was. I looked and, well, don’t waste your time. Their website leads you to the “US Peace Government” web page of a group of people who are trying to open 2400 “Peace Palaces” across the USA. Uh, OK.

The Reform Party was the one started by Ross Perot in 1995 for his second run for president. It seemed to consist of people who read Robert’s Rules of Order for fun so squabbles and infighting caused several splits to occur – the American Reform Party, the America First Party and oh, who cares about the rest. You get the idea. In 2005 the state committees from a few states even sued the state committees from some other states.

The funniest quote I’ve read this week, from Dave Barry:

I’ve been to every convention since 1984, and I have to say that Democratic delegates always manage to look good when they engage in group “rock-n-roll”-style dancing, in stark contrast to Republican delegates, who always look like they’re subjects in some kind of cruel mass experiment involving random-firing high-voltage buttock probes.

He is, unfortunately, exactly right.
